So you have a virus on your laptop and want to know how to remove it. Know that the process for removing a virus and malware is the same for both laptop and desktop. The difference is in the version of Windows that you have installed on your computer. This is because it is best to be in Windows Safe Mode when removing viruses and malware.
Getting to Safe Mode in Windows 8 and 10
Microsoft changed the way to star your computer in safe mode with Windows 8. Windows 8 and 10 enter safe mode the same way. If you are able to start your Windows 8 or Windows 10 computer it is best to hold down the “shift” key and click “Restart” to be able to enter safe mode.
Holding down the shift key when clicking on restart will cause Windows to restart to a special selection screen. Click the Troubleshoot option. This will open the Troubleshoot screen where you will click on “Advanced options”. Clicking on the Startup settings selection will allow Windows to restart in Safe Mode.
Starting Windows XP Vista 7 Into Safe Mode
The process for restarting a Windows 8 and 10 computer into safe mode is a lot more complicated than previous versions of Windows. With your computer shutdown turn your computer on and start pressing the “F8” key repeatedly. This will bring up the “Advanced Boot Options” area. Here you can use the arrow keys to highlight the selection you want and press the Enter key. Choose the “Safe Mode with Networking” option.
Using Utilities to Remove Viruses Once In Safe Mode
Once you have successfully started your computer into safe mode it is time to begin running the programs that will help you clean your Windows computer. The scope of this article will cover the basic process for virus and malware removal. This process will clean most computers but some viruses and malware may require more complicated procedures that may damage your Windows installation and will not be included here. If you are still having problems after using this procedure please click the “Chat Now” below or go to PC Helper 123 and consult a PC Helper for more advanced assistance.
While in “Safe Mode with Networking”Windows loads default drivers and several services are not loaded.
Step 1 Kill malicious or unnecessary processes running in the background
There may be processes running in the background that can interfere with the ability for a virus or malware scanner to detect and remove threats. Using rKill will stop these processes allowing for greater computer cleaning success. Download and save rKill to your desktop. Then run the application.
Step 2 Run a virus scanner that is not installed on your computer.
For this I recommend Eset’s Free Online Virus Scanner Click “Scan Now”and run the downloaded app. Follow the prompts provided when you run the application.
Step 3 Run the first Malware scan and removal program
After the Eset online virus scanner has completed it is time to scan for malware and PuPs that may not have been detected or left behind. HerdProtect is a malware detection program that uses several different scanning engines at once. Herdprotect will scan your laptop for any remain malware and PuP threats.
Step 4 Malwarebytes Junk Removal Tool (JRT)
Malware recently bought two utilities that have been computer technician favorites for some time. The Junk Removal Tool (JRT) scans several areas of your computer and removes any malicious or questionable settings. This includes browser add-ons. This will do a lot to removing threats and speeding up your Internet browsing experience.
Step 5 Malwarebytes
If you do not already have Malwarebytes installed then download Malwarebytes and run it. It is important to update Malwarebytes before scanning your computer.
Step 6 Malwarebytes ADWCleaner
ADWCleaner performs similar tasks that JRT did. There are a few settings and issues that it may detect that other utilities will not. Once you run this utility it will require you to restart your computer.
Your Computer Should Be Clean of Viruses and Malware
Your computer should now be virus and malware free. This is the basic cleaning process. When you restart your computer you should have a faster and more responsive computer.
