It seems to be happening a lot. All of a sudden when you click on a link to download a file Internet Explorer downloads the file and then tells you that your security settings won’t let you download or open this file.
When it happens you’re probably like everyone else and wonder what just happened. The first time you may even disregard it thinking Whew! Internet Explorer just saved me from getting something bad.
You May Be Infected With Powelicks Or More
The bad news is that Internet Explorer didn’t just save you from getting a virus but gave you a clue that you may already have one. There is a really bad virus out there called Powelicks that not only opens up the door for other Malware and Viruses. It also slowly but surely causes a slew of problems for you on your computer.
Some of the signs are a number of run.dll processes running, Internet Explorer not allowing you to download files and your computer becoming slower and slower. The good news is that there is a fairly easy way to remove it. Just get the free Powelicks Cleaner by Eset but how are you supposed to do that if Internet Explorer won’t let you download anything? Well luckily there is a way.
At the right top of Internet Explorer you will see a little gear icon. Click on this gear.
Uncheck the “Enable Protected Mode” box as shown in the picture above and then click the tab “Reset all zones to default level”. Click apply and close Internet Explorer.
Restart Internet Explorer and follow the link to the Powelicks Cleaner above. The download should now be successful but won’t be for long unless the Poweliks virus is successfully removed.
Your Computer Needs To Be Cleaned Of Viruses And Malware
Antivirus programs are a great tool. Most of the better ones will not only detect a lot of Viruses and Malware but they will automatically clean them too. The really bad thing about an Antivirus or AntiMalware program is that they usually give you a false sense of security.
If I had a dime every time I heard someone say that I don’t have a virus my Antivirus program says I’m clean I would be on a world cruise right now. The unfortunate truth is that simply means that something got past your Antivirus program either because it didn’t know how to detect it or it was hidden by something else that made it onto your computer system. Having the Poweliks virus and having to follow the above process to get things going is a perfect example of this happening. The bottom line is there are nearly 94 Million computers infected with some type of malware in the U.S. alone. Your computer was one of them that was infected that’s why you are here and your computer needs to be cleaned. Where there is one threat there are others.
At Least Do The Minimum Process
knowing the likelihood that there are other malware threats on your computer you should at least do the minimum process. This will at least get your computer under control and a little close if not seemingly completely back to normal.
If it is possible for you to do restart your computer in “safe mode with networking”. It is much easier for antivirus and antimalware programs to run and find threats in safe mode. If you don’t know how to get your computer into safe mode don’t worry. You can still run the following programs.
- rKill (Save to desktop and run)
- Eset Free Online Scanner
- Emsisoft Emergency Kit
- Junk Removal Tool (JRT)(Save to desktop and run)
This is a process that is actually more thorough than a lot of computer repair stores but is still an incomplete process. This is meant solely as a get control process and should be followed up by a thorough check by PC Helper 123.
