You need help getting your computer working right. I hear this from computer owners that own a new computer and those that have owned their computer for years. There is no rhyme or reason to the type of computers or computer owners that end up needing help.
When you find that your computer isn’t working like it used to there are a few options to choose from in order to get it behaving again
- Fix It Yourself
- Retail Computer Repair
- Mom & Pop Type Computer Repair
- Ask a Friend
- Remote Computer Repair
The DIY Computer Owner Technician
- Saving money
- Lack of trust toward others
- Want to learn for theirselves
No matter the reason behind why, the fact is there is a lot of information available on Google and Bing to help find a possible solution to what is happening to your computer. The problem is that many who lack experience may misdiagnose what is going on and focus on repairing problems that don’t exist.
For people who feel they have an excellent understanding of how a computer works fixing their own computer may be a reasonable option. For those with only basic to intermediate understanding of how their computer works it is possible that attempting to fix your own computer problems may simply make matters worse rather than better.
Using Retail Options To Get Your Computer Fixed
Retail computer repair is by far the most expensive option available. This is because of name recognition and the fact that all major repairs are actually sent to a computer repair center. Only the most basic computer work is actually done at a retail site.
In my personal opinion Retail computer repair is not an option I would ever choose. A few major factors of that are
- Price is double to triple of other options
- I never get to see the person actually working on my personal computer
- It may take weeks for me to get my computer back in some cases
Just due to the name of the retail location I am automatically being charged a premium this is a pet peeve of mine, I shouldn’t be charged three times as much just because you have a well known name. Then the fact that it is being sent off means I never get to see the person working on my computer, what they are doing while they have it, or get to communicate with them about what is going on and what they are thinking the problem is. I want to be in the direct know, don’t you?
Since my computer is actually being sent off it is going to take longer, whether it is three to four days or it’s two to three weeks. It’s going to be a longer time. I can’t but help thinking that since it is being sent off I could do that on my own too. Find a repair center with a good reputation and send off my computer to them for less than it costs me to turn my computer into the retailer. Like I said I am not real fond of the retail computer repair option.
Mom and Pop Computer Repair Shop
There are still small businesses in America. I would much rather be supporting the small business person whenever I have the chance. The smaller mom and pop type computer repair shops have several benefits over the retail option.
- Face to face with the person actually working on my computer
- Better communication
- I can sit and watch in a lot of cases
When I take my computer into the smaller shop I get to communicate directly with those people that are going to handle my computer. The wait time is going to at least be a couple of days shorter since it isn’t spending time being loaded into a truck and hauled all over the country.
The Remote Computer Repair Option
Since I offer this option myself it may be that I am biased. There are several things about the remote computer repair option that makes it better though it could be worse at the same time depending on who you choose to do the remote work.
- Immediate Response
- You Can Watch the Entire Time
- Able to Stop At Any Time
- Lower Cost of Repair
- Better Communication
Remote computer care is available immediately. There is no need to carry your computer into a store or leave it with anyone. It is also a process that you can sit and watch the entire time. If the tech is doing anything you don’t like or doesn’t make you feel comfortable you can stop it with a single click at any time.
Remote computer repair is just cheaper. The nature of remote computer repair is less expensive for the person or company providing it so it’s cheaper for you. Not to mention whether it is by phone or online chat we can communicate directly with the person doing the repair the entire time if that is something we choose to do. Personally the communication is something I find important.
Joining a Membership Is Even Better
Being a computer technician since 1988 I don’t personally have need of a personal PC Helper since I am one but for those that aren’t computer technicians having someone that you can contact whenever you have a question or something doesn’t look quite right without being charged is a very convenient thing to have. The fact that it costs less to join and have annual malware protection for less than a single virus removal is a valuable thing.
