I purposely clicked on a couple of ads on Facebook today. The ads led me to unsafe web sites. My Emsisoft Security protection stopped the connection before anything was downloaded to my computer but it showed how easy it is for people to become infected today. One of the ads was for a program that promised to speed up your computer.
It is ironic that the ad that promised to lead me to a faster PC again was going to install some software on my computer without my permission. Undoubtedly the download payload was something that was going to nag the hell out of me or slow down my computer.
Even if the speed up my PC type program wasn’t using sleazy practices to get sales there is a difference between a program and real people when it comes to a computer. There are a lot of different things that can slow down a computer. No single software can check everything and identify the unique problems that may be slowing down yours. Let alone actually fix it.
How Most Speed Up My PC Programs Work
Most Speed Up My PC type programs check areas of your computer that are typical for adding to a lower performance level.
- Temporary Files
- Hard Drive Fragmentation
- Hard Drive Health
- Average CPU Usage
Different software packages offers different information and suggestions. There are certain things that pushing a single button can do. Cleaning out temporary files for example is one of these performance enhancing actions.
Getting Rid of Temporary Files In Windows
Windows creates temporary files in an attempt to prevent the need for loading fresh files every time an action takes place. These temporary files contain all types of different information and is even a favorite place for malware to hide. The problem is that these files continue to add up and soon become a reason your computer is slower rather than speeding it up as it was intended. Cleaning out the temporary files on a regular basis will help Windows to perform faster.
Windows is not the only software that uses the temporary files method. Your web browsers like Chrome, Internet Explorer and others use temporary files to keep from having to download information over and over. The same performance problem eventually takes place as these temporary files grow. Cleaning them out can help your web browser to work better.
Defrag Your Hard Drive
The days of Windows XP and before were filled with the question “Have you defragmented your hard drive?”. Conventional (non SSD) hard drives read files front to back. This means the farther your files are spread out on your hard drive the longer it takes to get the information off of it. Defragmenting your hard drive places files together so the process of retrieving information is optimized.
What most people don’t know is that Windows Vista and new has the defrag scheduled to happen automatically by default. This means unless you or someone else has adjusted the schedule Windows will keep your hard drive defragmented automatically.
Hard Drive Health Smart Drive Information
Today’s conventional hard drives are S.M.A.R.T drives. They track what takes place. When your hard drive is in danger of failure programs that can read the S.M.A.R.T are of your hard drive can warn you before the problem becomes critical. This allows you to know if a failing hard drive may be a reason behind a slow computer and to backup your files before you lose them.
Average CPU Usage
If your CPU the brain of your computer is being used to much then it doesn’t have anything left to allow programs that are trying to run on your computer to function. Many programs have the ability to warn you when there is high CPU usage. This allows you to investigate what may be going wrong.
What’s All This Mean
These are all basic information things. There are a lot of programs available including a number of free programs that can do all of the same things for you. What they can’t do is use critical thinking skills to figure out why something is going wrong. A program is only able to do what it was programmed to do while an actual human tech can observer, evaluate, and solve problems that may be slowing down your computer. Not only can a real computer tech observe hi CPU usage they can also figure out how to fix the problem and prevent it from happening in the future.
What this all comes down to is that while software may be a good tool to help evaluate the current state of a computer it is not a good way to actually solve problems. Since there are so many different reasons that certain behaviors may be happening using a mind capable of solving problems in many different ways is the only real way to confront a slow PC.
